His creations (Fezziwig, Jacob Marley) then end up haunting him until he completes the book. In this witty tale of how “A Christmas Carol” came to be, the writer finds inspiration in the real-life folks of 1843 London, borrowing from their names and personality tics to conjure his fictional cast of characters. The 2017 Irish Canadian comedy film “The Man Who Invented Christmas” follows the thirtysomething Dickens (Dan Stevens) as he strives to overcome writer’s block and deliver another novella to his impatient publisher. Both my picks are alternate takes on the man of the season, Charles Dickens. There’s nothing quite like settling in for a full marathon of your favorite show or, better yet, a brand new show.Bah, humbug and God bless us, everyone. It’s also the perfect time to catch up on small screen favorites Jane the Virgin, New Girl, and How To Get Away with Murder on top of many other addictive selections. If you’re looking to delve into Netflix’s best original series premieres from the past year, you’ll want to check out MINDHUNTER, Ozark, Big Mouth, and GLOW, each of which have secured second season pickups. Thankfully, Netflix is the Christmas gift that keeps on giving with an endless supply of top-notch programming. After a long year of cramming your head full of knowledge at school and breaking your back at work, it’s time to have yourself a merry little binge-mas by revisiting old favorites, diving into the shows on your stacked watch list, and catching up with the ones you regrettably lost track of. That’s right: ‘Tis the season for taking advantage of the coziest time of year and binge-watching like there’s no tomorrow. For many, the week from the Christmas holiday to New Year’s Day is a haven of relaxation, where your biggest worry happens to be, “How many episodes of Stranger Things will I watch on Netflix today?” Nope, it’s the free time provided by the break between semesters and the vacation days from work.
